In 7 short chapters Ben lays out a personal and compelling case for giving Christianity another chance. Throughout it all, he is pointing us to Christ and the gospel, making it clear that this is it at the heart of it all.
The credibility of Christianity is something that has taken a massive hit in our media and culture, and people also have individual reasons for choosing to reject or flat-out ignore it. Ben recognises that, having wrestled with doubts over his personal faith (something he talks about in the final chapter), and so he wants to help those in a similar situation to start on the journey towards confidence in the claims Christianity makes.
The chapters deal with topics ranging from the intellectual credibility of Christianity to how it answers the question of why people suffer. They discuss issues we have all probably thought about at some point, although different chapters may resonate with some more than others: one person may be stumbling over the reliability of the Bible, while another might be currently grieving the loss of a loved one.
Ben isn’t seeking to lay out every piece of evidence, or answer every question in each chapter. This isn’t the final word on what Christianity is. But it’s not trying to be that. What it is is a compelling, clear, and humble invitation to think a little bit more about what Christianity is, and find out more about the person of Jesus.
This book is for your brother who grew up in the same Christian home as you but turned from the gospel; your mate who came with you to church a few times and wants to know more; your atheist friend who is curious about what you believe; the doubting Christian who needs to be given confidence in Christianity again. It would be a great book to read, share with a few friends and people in your family, and then follow up with them about what they thought. Ben himself recognises that he doesn’t expect this book to “convert” people (although the Lord may work that miracle in them by reading it!) but it may just push open a door for more opportunities to share the gospel with them.
